Cranfield manufacture a beautiful Artists’ Oil range with an exceptional level of intensity and clarity along with a superb Studio Oil range too. Both have quality at heart with a balanced colour selection. The Artists’ Oil range is so pure that it is beloved of artists who enjoy an oil paint in it’s strongest form. This means that there are natural differences across the range that highlight the characteristics of each pigment. The pigment gets to ‘rule the roost’ in the Artists’ Oil range whereas the Studio Oil range would generally have less of this natural variation across the range.
Giving you assurance
All our pigments are chosen to offer optimal lightfast values with great colour intensity. Our Artists’ Oil range carries the ACMI accreditation AP or CL and ASTM lightfast levels 1 or 2.
In praise of the daily grind
After mixing, the pigments and oils are passed through triple roll mills. We grind our colours just the right amount to release the full ‘colour value’ and ensure a smooth oil paint. Some pigments, like Ultramarine, need only gentle milling whereas coarser, pigments can require longer processing.
Patience is rewarded
Some colours are left to stand for some time. Historically known as ‘sweating’, this allows the pigment and oil ratio to reach equilibrium. Only then is the batch signed off by our colourmen, ready to be hand-pressed out into tins and our familiar aluminum tubes.

The palette includes a full range of low soluble Cadmiums sourced from reliable suppliers, as well as excellent non-toxic alternatives to Leads and Chromates.

Our Artists’ oil paints have the reliable buttery texture that is admired in quality British oil colours the world over - each paint responding easily to an artist's brush or knife and handling beautifully. They are a step up from our Studio range in that they have a higher pigment content, and have undergone further milling and sweating.

This is our multi-purpose primer for all types of oil painting, allowing paint to adhere consistently and offering an opaque gesso-like surface suitable for all types of painting supports.
Thixotropic means a fluid which is viscous but becomes freer-flowing when it is shaken or brushed on, and which returns to its viscous state over a predictable timescale when it comes to rest. These qualities are useful to artists in offering controllable application and reliable drying.

Thixotropic means a fluid which is viscous but becomes freer-flowing when it is shaken or brushed on, and which returns to its viscous state over a predictable timescale when it comes to rest. These qualities are useful to artists in offering controllable application and reliable drying.
